Video abstract - Participation is not the answer: epistemic violence and authoritarian practices in conservation-forced displacement

Jessica Milgroom and Priscilla Claeys take readers through their paper "Participation is not the answer: epistemic violence and authoritarian practices in conservation-forced displacement". They argue that the concept of participation in conservation projects falsely suggests that displaced people have decision-making power. In reality, their needs are often ignored. The article shows how invited spaces of induced participation amplify epistemic violence and entrench authoritarian practices, and how the policy narrative of participation ends up legitimizing and perpetuating harmful displacements. The authors advocate for a conservation and development approach that does not involve displacing people from their lands.
